Larry Wilson
Author, Founder & CEO
SafeStart
Larry began his career as a behavior – based safety consultant when he was 28. This did not help his credibility, but being so young did help in terms of getting people to tell the truth about their injuries and whether they were paying attention or not.
Getting people comfortable enough to talk about what really happened and to say whether rushing frustration, fatigue
and complacency were involved, was the key in developing what Larry is probably best known for: being the author and creator of SafeStart — an advanced safety awareness training program currently being used by over 4 million employees in 65 countries.
To complement the adult training programs, Larry has also written and produced video training programs for children, teenagers and the family. He recently released new episodes of the Boo Boo Bandits, a film that inspires children to take an interest in safety and teaches them how to avoid injury by recognizing hazards. Larry is also the author of SafeTrack, a traditional observation and feedback process.
Along with co-author Gary Higbee, Larry wrote the book, “Inside Out — Rethinking Traditional Safety Management Paradigms”. Larry was also the editor for, “3rd Generation SafetycUsing Neuroscience to Enable Personal Safety”, by Cristian Sylvestre. In addition, he is the author of over 30 articles published in safety magazines all over the world.
Most recently, Larry wrote a series of 12 Paradigm Shifts articles that were featured in some of the main safety publications around the world. Larry’s
Paradigm Shift series addresses risk assessment, unexpected events, safety judgment and skill development, neuroscience, the complacency continuum, deliberate risk and how to handle these issues with a focus on human factors.
Larry has also published the book, Defenseless Moments, to provide a different perspective on serious injuries, based on these 12 Paradigm Shift articles. The book is a great read for those that want to have these great safety topics on hand in one publication, and it’s an excellent companion to his previous book, Inside Out.
